The workplace isn’t quite as defined at it once was. It does not exist within four walls, or even between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. In today’s global economy, the workplace is rapidly changing and its network needs are no longer simple solutions.
Workers, whether they are telecommuting one day a week, on a sales trip, or working in a small satellite office, need the same access to web-based applications as their colleagues in the corporate office. Take this statistic: Recent survey results found 84 percent of workers used at least one tool to enable remote working in the past month. Meaning, if a new satellite office opens, or a home-based employee joins the team, IT has to deploy new hardware into the network. This can delay on-boarding time, as well as cause disruptions in the regular course of business if hardware fails (which it inevitably does).

Total Cost of Ownership

A hardware-based WAN network has a large capital outlay, as well as routine maintenance costs. Routers, access devices, network security, upgrades to hardware, cooling mechanisms, and consulting services to fine-tune network performance are just a few examples of one-time and ongoing costs. Once a network reaches critical mass with a hardware-based solution, it can become difficult to switch to a new vendor or execute a new strategy.

Choosing between security and performance is not something IT professionals want to do. Both are equally essential to the success of the enterprise.
